Amur leopards
Only 57 Amur leopards remain in the wild — and it's going to take international cooperation to save them. Amur leopards are worth protecting. Their habitat ranges from the wilds of the Russian Far East to parts of China. They can jump nineteen feet in the air and run thirty-seven miles an hour.
But even with their remarkable strength and speed, Amur leopards may not be able to outrun extinction.
While trafficking in wildlife is largely illegal, these beautiful and solitary cats are hunted mercilessly for their gorgeous pelts. To save these amazing animals, the Russian and Chinese governments who oversee the Amur leopards' range must do more to provide them a safe haven from poachers — and that will require a new sanctuary for the leopards across the Amur's range in both Russia and China. Conservation efforts to save Amur leopards from extinction won't work unless the Russian and Chinese governments agree to cooperate. However, the Amur's fate remains largely unknown to the world —and we will need an outpouring of international support to convince these governments to act.
