Heartbreaking Video of Elephant in Indonesian Zoo Shows Exactly Why We Need to End Captivity

However questionable the very practice of keeping wild animals in captivity is, the existence of zoos always finds its defenders – after all, it cannot be that bad for animals in all zoos, can it? Even though there are establishments actually devoted to taking good care of the animals there and keeping only those who do not have the option of being in their natural habitat anymore, this argument quickly becomes detrimental to the case at large when it is applied too liberally. Many zoos have no ground for their practices being defended in any way – and many are an image of conditions so inhumane they should have no way of working anymore.
The Surabaya Zoo, located in Indonesia, is nicknamed the “Zoo of Death” – and this short video shows all too clearly why. The infamous zoo is known for treating its animals in an appalling way, denying them even the basic care and nutrition, which causes the mortality rate to be very high. In the video, a chained elephant is seen struggling hopelessly to get out of the unbelievable trap – and it is in no way the first example of cruelty in the establishment, and not even the first one to go viral.
Animal activists and lovers around the world are hoping to influence the President of the country to close the zoo once and for all. According to the website Netzfrauen.org, in the Surabaya Zoo, many animals die because of negligence and of starvation each month. Suns Bears are fed so badly they have to eat their own excrement. A Sumatran elephant Yani died in the zoo in May 2016, shackled in chains. In 2014, a giraffe died at the premises and was found to have 40 lbs of plastic trash in her stomach.
The shocking and deplorable conditions of the zoo clearly cannot remain as they are, the only answer to the animals’ suffering being apathy and lack of definite action. Click here to sign the petitions to the President of Indonesia to shut down the zoo and finally give the animals kept there respectable living conditions!
