Kulimba
Kulimba (“Strength”) was the name Remke Lasance, a Dutch national who has been living and volunteering in Kasungu National Park, Malawi since 2012, gave the individual she documented.
Kulimba battled a mortal injury from a poacher’s homemade bullet. While Lasance monitored the elephant’s health, it suddenly took a turn for the worse and she died before veterinary help could arrive.
Over the years, poaching has reduced Kasungu National Park’s elephant population from more than 1,000 individuals to about 50, and Remke realized that it was essential to identify and observe each individual long-term as part of a process to help better protect them.
