RIP Arturo the polar bear
Arturo (29/30 years old) was Argentina’s only polar bear. Now, you might be wondering why Argentina had a polar bear, and as ridiculous as that thought is, it is the reality – he lived in anenclosure Mendoza Zoo. Arturo has been wasting away in this zoo facility for the past 20 years.
The living conditions of the cage Arturo resided in were controversial, as temperatures reach up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Argentina, and the pool in Arturo's cage was only 20 inches deep.
Poor Arturo’s health has been on the decline in the past year and he was extremely thin and obviously depressed. Arturo's plight came to the attention of animal rights advocates, who dubbed him 'the world's saddest animal' when they launched a petition to call for him to be moved. The polar bear has been alone in his enclosure since his partner, Pelusa, died of cancer in 2012. Visitors to the zoo, and animal experts, had reported seeing him pacing nervously in his concrete enclosure, and appearing to struggle with the high temperatures. The last polar bear to die in Argentina did so during a heatwave in 2012.
On July 3, 2016, activists associated with the Free Arturo USA/Canada provided a translation of a death announcement from the Ali's official website. May he rest in peace.
